The Problem: ruin food stocks by contaminating products

What are SPIs?

Stored Product Insects are a group of pests—primarily beetles, moths, and weevils—that live and breed within dry food commodities. Unlike other pests that scavenge for crumbs, SPIs spend their entire life cycle inside their food source, meaning they are often "born" into the products you buy or store. Common species include the Indian Meal Moth, Saw-Toothed Grain Beetle, and Rice Weevil.

How Did They Get In?

SPIs are unique because they are rarely "invaders" from the outside; they are usually imported:Infested Shipments: Most SPIs enter a facility inside contaminated batches of flour, grains, nuts, spices, or dried fruit.Cross-Contamination: Once inside a pantry or warehouse, they can easily migrate from one package to another, even through sealed plastic or cardboard.Hidden Residue: Small amounts of spilled flour or grain in the cracks of shelving provide a "nursery" for colonies to grow and spread.

Signs of an Infestation

Because these pests are small and live inside packaging, you must look for subtle clues:

store insects
Silk Webbing

Fine, spider-like webs found on the surface of flour or inside boxes (produced by moth larvae).

rice insects
Clumping

Granular products like sugar or flour sticking together in unusual lumps.

SPI
Crawl Activity

Tiny beetles or "worms" (larvae) found on the outside of packages or on shelving.

stored product insects
Zigzag Flight

Seeing small, brown moths flying in an erratic "zigzag" pattern near storage areas, especially at night.
