Termites: The Silent Destroyers
The Problem: structural damage
What Are Termites?
Termites are social insects that live in massive colonies, often numbering in the millions. Known as "white ants," they are one of the few organisms capable of digesting cellulose, the primary component of wood. Because they live underground or deep within wooden structures, they can go undetected for years, causing catastrophic damage before a property owner even realizes they are present.
How Did They Get In?
Termites are relentless in their search for moisture and food: Subterranean Access: Most infestations start from the soil. They build "mud tubes" to bridge the gap between the ground and your home's wooden frame. Ground-to-Wood Contact: Any wood touching the soil, such as fence posts, deck supports, or door frames, acts as a direct highway into the building. Cracks in Foundation: They can squeeze through gaps as small as 1.5mm in concrete slabs or brickwork.
Signs of an Infestation
Termites are masters of disguise. Often, by the time you see them, the damage is already extensive. Look for:

Mud Tubes
Pencil-sized tunnels made of mud and debris running along foundation walls or floor joists.

Discarded Wings
After a "swarm," reproductive termites shed their wings. Finding piles of small, translucent wings on windowsills is a major red flag.

Tight-Fitting Doors/Windows
As termites consume wood, they leave behind moisture that causes the wood to swell, making doors and windows difficult to open.

Hollow-Sounding Wood
When tapped, infested wood will sound thin or papery because the interior has been eaten away.
Protect Your Investment
A termite colony never sleeps; they eat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For every day an infestation is ignored, your property's value decreases.
